Central America MTB Race Courses

2011
01.03

It is important to learn the local situation before going for the Central America’s mountain bike race, because this will be helpful. This particular required us to collect many a adrenalin-rushing accounts from El Reto.

One of the most popular forms of mountain bike racing these days is something called El Reto. El Reto was established in the year 2007 and derives it’s name from Guatemala’s national bird, the quetzal. This is a fitting comparison. Riders glide across sharp 30 degree slopes, climbing to an elevation of 10,000′. Perceptive maneuvering is required when downhilling on narrow, winding mountain roads, in order to avoid a wreck with oncoming traffic.

The 3-day El Reto event is rich in history, with a course used by Mayans for hundreds of years. This race has more single-track mileage than other epics. This 145-mile race begins in Antigua and terminates at Retalhuleu. Either the two-person teams check in at three points each day within five minutes of each rider, or they end up with a 60-minute penalty. After the conclusion of the race, accumulated times are added for a determination of final results.

Greg Bruce and Scott Seaton, from Oregon, the 2008 El Reto second-place winners share their adventure ‘ If you are from North America or Europe this is a “must read” to prepare you for the Central American MTB races.’ Scott remarked that the miles are long yet they aren’t too rough. It is the difference between racing and survival.

“El Reto is easier than La Ruta because La Ruta has more hills and faster competition.” tells us Susan Haywood, a pro world champ and rides for Trek/Volkswagen and is also featured in one of our previous articles. El Reto, which didn’t have much in the way of single track, was a little easier than some American races like the Breck Epic and Pisgah MTB Stage Race.

Sharing his vivid El Reto stories and images, Jason Hilimire another pro biker, writes : On Day 1 ‘ After the long lunch, it was back to the room for an hour of naptime and then right back to the restaurant to eat a second lunch.’We were so hungry we scarcely noticed the first. Thanks to our second lunch, we had even more incentive to rest up so that at the dinner buffet, we could feast on anything and everything that would fill us to the gills.

Stage racing, ride, eat, sleep, eat again, sleep again, etc. What could be any better? Let it not dupe you! Jason entered “The prior day’s efforts were exhausting and had worn me down even though I was expecting the second day to be an epic day also” into his journal. Although diminutive in height, it had lots of lift, elevating us to over 9500ft.

Advantages of a Costa Rica Vacation Rental

2010
12.19

For those considering visiting in Central America generally and Costa Rica in specific, villa accommodations have become a popular alternative for newlyweds, friends and young families in search of an alternative to packaged getaways at a holiday resort. Villa vacation accommodations can offer the conveniences of home and increased flexibility to shape your days and nights. Here are a few points to consider when deciding between a resort and a vacation villa accommodation:

1) Privacy. Much like staying at home, you can behave more naturally and be less concerned about being disruptions from others. In a private villa you are able to steer clear of finding myself close quarters with other guests with communal walls as it is the case with most resorts. Furthermore, two or more bedrooms in the villa mean much more personal privacy as well for family members members.

2) Space. You now have the space of your house when in a rental property. Generally there is a family room, an open kitchen, an outdoor patio as well as a pool deck together with a number of sleeping rooms and bathrooms. This makes for more space to roam around in and more places to hang out, both inside the villa as well as about the property.

3) Your Own Personal Swimming Pool! Many luxury rental properties consider a privately owned swimming pool to be an indispensable vacation element. If you forget your towel, your lotion, your shades or book, there’s no need to pack up and walk back to your hotel room and maybe lose your preferred lounge chair.

4) Conveniences. Whipping up a snack or mixing up a tropical drink is possible with the villa kitchen readily available. Washing and drying your favorite swimsuit to be ready for the following day is straightforward with the laundry room just around the corner. With a vacation home, everything is a couple of steps away.

5) In-House Activities. In high end vacation rental homes, easy access to collections of DVDs, CDs, books and access to the Internet are usually givens, without having to share the TV or sound system with other guests.

As you start planning your next vacation, think about the type of lodging you want to appreciate during and after you’re finished with your day. For anyone looking for a more natural home-like experience with a wider array (and closer access to) conveniences, a villa holiday rental experience may very well be just the thing for you!

Reasons To Visit San Jose, Costa Rica

2010
07.19

I used to think of San Jose as a stop over after you fly into the international airport and move on to your next destination. But I discovered it is so much more.

Many travelers make this their home base for day trips to some of the country’s most popular attractions: Volcano Poas and Irazu, coffee planation tours, nature parks and a lot more. Because this is a pulsating cultural capital of Costa Rica that is full of museums, theaters, delicious international restaurants, and great shopping.

Whenever I visit San Jose I like to stay in Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation & Inn. It is a luxurious boutique hotel located in the middle of Heredia’s cloud forest in Costa Rica. The hotel offers two luxurious master suites and eleven spacious and well decorated junior suites. All of their rooms include a jacuzzi, a mini bar and private verandas overlooking Costa Rica’s Central Valley. It is perfect for a romantic getaway of a family vacation.

We stayed here for a couple of nights and it was a great way to spend a long family weekend. An outstanding characteristic of this hotel as the staff was because they are not only nice. They are also very thoughtful and helpful.

The rooms were so fantastic that even if we stayed in one of the smallest rooms of the hotel is was still very spacious and comfortable. It had a living room and a private patio but what I loved the most was the huge and beautiful bathroom.

And the grounds are beautiful. Whenever I wasn’t exploring the city I spent a lot of time exploring it as my son ran around. Also the restaurant offers so much more than delicious food. There is an amazing view of the nearby San Jose City.

It is definitely a great place to visit if you are in the Central Valley because it is close to Alajuela, Escazu, Grecia and Santa Ana.
